NCAA President Charlie Baker Welcomes Trump's Proposal for Collegiate Athletics Commission
NCAA President Charlie Baker expresses openness to President Donald Trump's proposal for a commission on collegiate athletics, highlighting the need for clarity and legislative support in college sports.

NCAA president Charlie Baker has shown a willingness to engage with President Donald Trump's proposal for a commission on collegiate athletics. Speaking at the ACC meetings in Amelia Island, Florida, Baker emphasized the importance of addressing the complex issues facing college sports today.
"I'm up for anything that can help us get somewhere," Baker stated during an informal media availability. He acknowledged the growing interest from the executive branch in collegiate athletics, which he believes underscores the broader attention being paid to the challenges within the sport.
Baker highlighted the NCAA's ongoing efforts in Washington, seeking congressional assistance to tackle three major issues: the inconsistency of state laws governing collegiate athletics, the classification of student-athletes as employees, and the need for a national standard for name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights.
ACC commissioner Jim Phillips echoed Baker's sentiments, emphasizing the necessity for a unified approach. "We have been very bold in the desire for a national standard when it comes to NIL," Phillips said in an interview with ACC Network. "We need to make sure that we have something that comes out of Washington that connects all 50 of the states because we've had a piecemeal project and it's really undermined college sports."
Baker also noted that while discussions have taken place with those working on the proposed commission, the framework and membership have yet to be finalized. When asked if the commission would enhance the NCAA's chances for legislative relief, Baker remained cautiously optimistic. "I don't have a crystal ball on that one," he said. "But it's quite clear that there are a lot of people interested in college sports, and we do need some help to create clarity around these issues."
As the NCAA continues to navigate these challenges, Baker's openness to collaboration with the proposed commission reflects a proactive approach to securing the future of collegiate athletics.
