Miami Marlins Roster Shakeup: Dane Myers Returns, Matt Mervis Designated for Assignment

The Miami Marlins make significant roster changes, reinstating Dane Myers and designating Matt Mervis for assignment. Get the latest updates on the team's strategy and player performances.

The Miami Marlins have made a series of roster moves that could significantly impact their season. On Friday, they reinstated outfielder Dane Myers from the 10-day injured list. Myers had been sidelined since May 12 due to a right oblique strain and made a rehab appearance with Triple-A Jacksonville before his return.

In a surprising move, the Marlins designated opening day first baseman Matt Mervis for assignment. Mervis, acquired from Chicago last December, started the season strong with six home runs and 12 RBI in the first 20 games. However, his performance declined sharply, with a .111 batting average, no homers, and 20 strikeouts over the past month.

"Matt just didn't quite get it going offensively," said Marlins manager Clayton McCullough. "We felt it was time to shift gears and give other players a chance to step up and contribute."

Taking over at first base will be Eric Wagaman, also acquired in December. McCullough mentioned that rookie catcher Liam Hicks will also see some time at first base.

The Marlins also called up infielder Jack Winkler and outfielder Heriberto Hernández from the minors. In a corresponding move, infielder Graham Pauley was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville.

Another notable change involved rookie second baseman Ronny Simon, who was designated for assignment after committing three errors in three innings during a loss at San Diego. Simon, who had been a key player earlier in the season, tearfully exited the game and ran into the dugout after being taken out in the fifth inning.

"Ronny was a great teammate and did some nice things for us," McCullough said. "But we need to make adjustments to improve our performance."

Looking ahead, Xavier Edwards is expected to move from shortstop to second base upon his return from the injured list. Edwards, recovering from a left mid back strain, began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Jacksonville on Thursday and was scheduled to play second base on Friday night.

Otto Lopez, who has been starting at shortstop in Edwards' absence, will continue in that role. McCullough expressed confidence in Edwards' ability to transition back to second base, noting his previous success at the position.

These roster changes highlight the Marlins' ongoing efforts to find the right mix of players to turn their season around. Fans will be watching closely to see how these adjustments impact the team's performance in the coming weeks.
