The NFL has taken a significant step in recognizing the often-overlooked contributions of offensive linemen with the introduction of the Protector of the Year award. This new accolade, announced by Troy Vincent, executive vice president of football operations, is a direct result of the persistent efforts of Dion Dawkins, the Buffalo Bills' left tackle.

Dawkins, who has been vocal about the need for such an award, saw his vision come to life after years of advocacy. "The domino finally fell over when we were at the Roger Goodell party for the Super Bowl," Dawkins recounted. "I said, 'Rog, you got Orlando Pace here, you got me here, you got these guys here. We need an award for the big guy.'"

The award will be presented annually at the NFL Honors event, starting with the 2025 season. A panel of former standout offensive linemen, including LeCharles Bentley, Jason Kelce, and Andrew Whitworth, will select the winner based on criteria such as skill metrics, team impact, leadership, durability, and strength of opponent.

Dawkins' inspiration for the award came from a poignant moment during a news conference. He spoke about the lack of recognition for offensive linemen, likening it to military service. "[The veteran] spoke about how he could never imagine not being able to receive an award or anything, or a medal, for him going to battle every day with his life on the line for his country," Dawkins shared. This interaction led to a profound realization and fueled his determination to create the award.

The introduction of the Protector of the Year award has been met with widespread acclaim, both within the NFL community and among fans. Dawkins expressed his gratitude, stating, "It feels like I have an actual voice. That my voice is actually heard, 'cause, like, we're in little ol' Buffalo, but my words are going further than just Orchard Park."

This award not only honors the current generation of offensive linemen but also aims to inspire future players. "Kids are going to be able to grow up bigger playing O-line, and they're going to say, one day I want to win the Protector of the Year award," Dawkins said.

While the award currently recognizes individual players, Dawkins hinted at the possibility of future accolades for entire offensive lines. "An award for the entire line will happen, but we have to start somewhere," he noted.
