De Minaur Eyes Australian Open Quarterfinals
After three years of being knocked out in the fourth round of the Australian Open, Alex de Minaur is aiming to finally reach the quarterfinals. The Australian has been in good form recently, winning titles in Acapulco and 's-Hertogenbosch, and reaching the quarterfinals in the last three majors of the year.
De Minaur is seeded eighth at this year's Australian Open, which is his highest seeding ever. He has already beaten Botic Van De Zandschulp and Tristan Boyer in the first two rounds, and will face Francisco Cerundolo in the third round. If he can win that match, he will likely face Stefanos Tsitsipas in the fourth round.
Tsitsipas is the defending champion, but he has been struggling with form this year. De Minaur will be hoping to take advantage of that and reach the quarterfinals for the first time in his career. He will need to play his best tennis if he is to do so, but he is confident that he can do it.
“Over the last couple years, I feel like I’ve become a better version of myself,” de Minaur said. “Every time I come here to the Australian Open, I feel like I’m a better version of what I was the year before. I’ve learnt so much. I’m playing with a lot more confidence. I’m doing all the right things.”
The Australian Open quarterfinals will be held on January 26 and 27. De Minaur will be hoping to be one of the players competing in those matches. He will know that he will have to play well if he is to do so, but he is confident that he can do it.
“Do Australia proud,” de Minaur said. “I’m going to do my best to hopefully play a lot of matches here, win a lot of matches. Yeah, do Australia proud.”
