The Ultimate Guide to F1 Sprint Races: Format, Qualifying, and Points Explained

Discover everything you need to know about F1 sprint races, including the format, qualifying process, and how points are awarded in these high-speed events.

What is an F1 Sprint Race?

An F1 sprint race is a shorter, high-intensity race designed to add excitement to the traditional Formula 1 weekend. Covering 100 km—approximately one-third of a standard grand prix distance—these races last around 30 minutes. The shorter duration encourages more dynamic and less strategic racing, with no pit stops involved. It's all about aggressive, flat-out racing from start to finish.

How Does an F1 Sprint Race Work?

During a traditional F1 weekend, drivers participate in five sessions: three practice sessions, a qualifying session, and the main grand prix event. However, on a sprint weekend, the schedule is condensed to maximize action:

  • Friday: One practice session followed by a qualifying session that determines the starting grid for the sprint race.
  • Saturday: The sprint race takes place, replacing the third practice session. Later in the day, qualifying for the grand prix occurs as usual.
  • Sunday: The grand prix main event.

Qualifying for an F1 Sprint Race

Qualifying for the sprint race is held on Friday afternoon and is divided into three stages:

  1. Stage 1: The five slowest drivers are eliminated.
  2. Stage 2: Another five drivers are cut.
  3. Stage 3: The remaining ten drivers compete for the top grid positions. The fastest driver secures the pole position for Saturday's sprint race.

Points System for Sprint Races

Sprint races offer additional points to drivers:

  • 1st Place: 8 points
  • 2nd Place: 7 points
  • 3rd Place: 6 points
  • 4th Place: 5 points
  • 5th Place: 4 points
  • 6th Place: 3 points
  • 7th Place: 2 points
  • 8th Place: 1 point

Why Were Sprint Races Introduced?

F1 introduced sprint races in 2021 to provide fans with more racing action throughout the weekend. These events are held at six of the season's most suitable locations, adding an extra layer of excitement and unpredictability.
