Jacksonville Jaguars' New GM James Gladstone Shifts Strategy in NFL Free Agency
Discover how Jacksonville Jaguars' new GM James Gladstone is reshaping the team's approach to free agency and the draft for long-term success.

The Jacksonville Jaguars, under the leadership of new General Manager James Gladstone, have taken a markedly different approach to this year's NFL free agency. Despite signing nine players, including five projected starters, the focus has been on building a solid foundation rather than splurging on high-profile names.
A Strategic Shift
Gladstone emphasized that the primary goal was to 'raise the floor' of the team. The signings, which include veteran defensive backs Jourdan Lewis and Eric Murray, offensive linemen Patrick Mekari and Robert Hainsey, and receiver Dyami Brown, are designed to strengthen the core of the roster. These players are expected to provide stability and allow the Jaguars to focus on developing talent through the draft.
Financial Prudence
In contrast to previous years, the Jaguars have been more cautious with their spending. The total guaranteed money for seven of the nine players is $65.45 million, a significant reduction from the $155.25 million spent in 2022. This shift reflects a broader strategy of using free agency to fill specific needs rather than relying on it to build the team's core.
Building Through the Draft
Gladstone, along with head coach Liam Coen and executive vice president Tony Boselli, is committed to building the team through the draft. With 10 picks in each of the next two drafts, the Jaguars aim to address key areas such as the defensive line, edge rusher, cornerback, and receiver. This approach allows for the development of young talent and ensures long-term success.
Looking Ahead
The Jaguars' new strategy marks a departure from their previous approach under former GM Trent Baalke. By focusing on the draft and making calculated moves in free agency, the team is positioning itself for sustained competitiveness in the NFL. As Gladstone noted, 'We're going to allow these rookies to get a chance to get out on the field and help us this coming fall.'
