Mercedes Shifts Focus: Russell and Antonelli Lead Team Into 2026 as Verstappen Pursuit Fades
Mercedes' Toto Wolff confirms the team is no longer considering Max Verstappen, focusing on George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli for the 2026 F1 season.

In a strategic shift, Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team has decided to solidify its future with George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli, sidelining any further pursuits of Max Verstappen. This decision comes as team principal Toto Wolff prepares for contract renewals and focuses on building a competitive lineup for the 2026 season.
Strategic Focus and Team Stability
Wolff has emphasized the importance of continuity and internal development over external acquisitions. George Russell, who has been with Mercedes since 2022, is seen as a pivotal figure in the team's strategy. Andrea Kimi Antonelli, a promising talent from the Mercedes Junior Team, is set to make his F1 debut in 2025, bringing fresh energy and potential to the squad.
The End of Verstappen's Pursuit
Last summer, Wolff engaged in discussions with Verstappen’s entourage, including his father Jos Verstappen and manager Raymond Vermeulen. However, the team eventually concluded that continuing this pursuit would distract from their core objectives. Wolff stated, "We need to concentrate on our driver line-up, we need to do the best that we can."
Contract Extensions and Future Plans
Russell's contract is up for renewal at the end of the current season. Wolff plans to commence negotiations well before the August summer break, ensuring minimal disruption to the team’s performance dynamic. "I’m someone who sticks to what he says, and these two are the combination that I want to go forward with Mercedes," Wolff affirmed.
A New Era for Mercedes
This season marks the first in 12 years without Lewis Hamilton, who has transitioned to Ferrari. Despite this significant change, Wolff noted that the shift within the team has been less dramatic internally than perceived externally. He reflected, "It’s what we’ve been thinking of for almost a year’s time. Kimi’s been with the team such a long time, also testing Formula One cars, this is just what it is."
Looking Ahead
As Mercedes looks to reclaim its top position in Formula One, the focus remains clear: nurture the talent within and build a formidable team for the future. The combination of Russell’s experience and Antonelli’s potential signifies a robust foundation for the team’s aspirations.
