Tony Kanaan Elevates to McLaren IndyCar Team Principal: A New Era Begins
Tony Kanaan transitions from driver to McLaren IndyCar Team Principal, marking a new chapter in his racing career and McLaren's strategic evolution.

In a significant move for the IndyCar racing world, McLaren has announced the promotion of Tony Kanaan to the role of Team Principal for its IndyCar organization. This transition marks a pivotal moment in Kanaan's illustrious career, following his retirement from professional racing after the 2023 Indianapolis 500.
Kanaan, aged 50, has been an integral part of McLaren since concluding the 2024 season as the team's deputy boss, a role he assumed after his tenure as a special adviser. His extensive experience and profound understanding of the sport have positioned him as the ideal leader to steer McLaren's IndyCar team into its next chapter.
In addition to Kanaan's promotion, McLaren has also appointed Kevin Thimjon as its president. This strategic addition highlights McLaren's commitment to bolstering its leadership team with top-tier talent, aimed at enhancing both the competitive and business facets of the organization.
"A lot has happened since my last Indy 500 less than two years ago, to say the least," remarked Kanaan, reflecting on his transition from the racetrack to the helm of the team. "I've embraced every opportunity to grow with the team and I'm excited to officially step into the Team Principal role. Having Kevin join us on the business side is a vital part of our overarching strategy to win." Kanaan emphasized the importance of gathering and nurturing exceptional talent to strengthen the team's foundation.
Kanaan's storied career includes a remarkable victory in the IndyCar Series championship in 2004 and a triumphant win at the Indianapolis 500 in 2013, underscoring his legacy as one of the sport's most celebrated figures. On the other hand, Thimjon brings a wealth of executive experience to McLaren, having previously contributed to Core BTS, Lids Sports Group, and Just Marketing International.
The upcoming 2025 IndyCar Series season, commencing on March 2 at the St. Petersburg Grand Prix, will see McLaren's drivers Pato O'Ward, Nolan Siegel, and Christian Lundgaard hitting the track under Kanaan's leadership, setting the stage for what promises to be an exhilarating and transformative season.
