Lily Yohannes Joins OL Lyonnes: A New Chapter for USWNT's Rising Star

USWNT midfielder Lily Yohannes signs a three-year deal with French champions OL Lyonnes, marking a significant step in her burgeoning career.

United States women's national team (USWNT) midfielder Lily Yohannes has officially signed a three-year contract with French powerhouse OL Lyonnes, as announced by the club on Monday. This move marks a significant milestone in the career of the 18-year-old American prodigy.

A Rising Star in Women's Soccer

Lyonnes, the eight-time champions of Europe, finalized the transfer agreement with Ajax last week. Yohannes' contract will run through June 30, 2028. Sources revealed that the transfer fee is around €450k ($526k), with Ajax also securing a percentage in any future transfer. Yohannes' previous contract with Ajax was set to expire in June 2026.

International Career and Achievements

Yohannes has already earned eight caps for the USWNT, making her debut in June 2024 at just 17 years old. She scored within ten minutes of her first appearance, showcasing her talent on the international stage. In November 2024, Yohannes made the pivotal decision to represent the United States internationally, despite interest from the Netherlands, where she was reportedly in the process of securing Dutch citizenship.

Early Beginnings and Professional Journey

Born in Virginia, Yohannes moved to the Netherlands with her family at the age of 10. She signed her first professional contract with Ajax at 15 and quickly made headlines. In 2023, at just 16 years old, she became the youngest player to ever start a UEFA Women's Champions League match, leading Ajax to a 2-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain.

Coach's Perspective

USWNT head coach Emma Hayes has high hopes for Yohannes, stating, "She's got unbelievable maturity and coachability, and someone who I know is going to become an important part of our program." Hayes emphasized the importance of patience in Yohannes' development, considering her young age and limited high-level experience.

Future Prospects

With her move to OL Lyonnes, Yohannes is poised to further develop her skills and gain invaluable experience in one of the most competitive leagues in women's soccer. This transfer not only highlights her potential but also underscores the growing influence of American talent in European football.

Where to Watch

For fans eager to follow Yohannes' journey, Disney+ has become the new home of the Women's Champions League in Europe, offering live coverage of all 75 matches each season. Visit the Disney+ website to get access.
